Stranded during an away mission, B’Elanna finds herself the inspiration for a young poet’s art.
On an away mission searching for dilithium, B’Elanna is stranded alone on a strange planet when the Delta Flyer’s warp core is damaged and she orders Harry into an escape pod. While she is still unconscious, a young poet named Kelis finds the shuttle and uses B’Elanna’s data logs to piece together the story of Voyager and its “eternals.” He creates a play and his patron demands more of them. Once B’Elanna regains consciousness, she reluctantly agrees to share more of her story with Kelis in exchange for dilithium.
As the Voyager crew scans for communication from the Delta Flyer, B’Elanna works to restore power to the shuttle. However, she can’t get the transmitter on-line and needs a special tool Kelis can make for her with alloys on the planet. She tells him more stories of the Vulcans in return, and he begins writing another play. Unfortunately, the patron becomes angered by an enemy and prepares for war, which will bring troops into the mountains where B’Elanna is hiding. Kelis convinces her to help him craft a story powerful enough to prevent the war.
Back on Voyager, an alien transport ship relays the distress signal they accidentally received from the Delta Flyer. Meanwhile, B’Elanna and Kelis continue working on the play. Kelis has injected romance into the plot, thinking that love scenes will overcome his patron’s war mentality, but B’Elanna convinces him it is unrealistic. Instead, they plan a powerful scene where Janeway will make peace with the Borg Queen rather than destroying her. Later that night, Harry surprises B’Elanna and returns bearing good news—he has a transmitter from the escape pod.
Finally getting the sub-space transmitter online, B’Elanna and Harry succeed in reaching Voyager with the news that they are alive. With their crew en route, B’Elanna receives a message from Kelis. His play is being performed for the patron, but he has yet to write a satisfactory ending. Knowing that she is the poet’s inspiration, B’Elanna tells a confused Harry to wait for her signal and then beams off of the Flyer.
With the final scene about to be played out, B’Elanna arrives on the stage and guides Kelis to the inspiring ending he needs. She tells him goodbye, both for the play’s sake and for real, and then shocks everyone by signaling Harry to beam her to Voyager. The fantastic message of peace and friendship is not lost on Kelis, who uses it as his ending to encourage the patron against further war.
